I am a pretty passionate person – especially when it comes to our breed of dog – as many of you know. I have never yet in our annual report given an editorial, but the time has come!

I would like to title our cover photo “The Future of the DK”.

We came into this type of dog from many different places. Maybe we had GSPs for many years and decided we needed something easier to live with; a dog with more focused drive, more obedience. Maybe we saw or hunted with a German hunting dog and became infatuated. How we found ourselves here isn’t as important as why we found ourselves here, with these easy dogs. The reason why our German dogs are the way they are is extremely important.

This may be redundant to some of our members, but a refresher never hurts. Why are our German dogs so extremely easy at their job? It’s because everything we do here as a hobby is a requirement in Germany, with tried-and-true results. It is, quite simply, the testing (and secondly, breeding) regime that these dogs are required to go through to be ALLOWED to be used as a hunting dog in Germany. For this reason, if it’s a requirement in Germany, it’s a requirement for us. In North America we do not need to have a well-trained, tested and insured dog to be able to hunt. We do the whole German testing process in North America as a hobby with results that make it all worthwhile. Of course, we in North America have to abide by the Deutsch-Kurzhaar Verband regulations to be able to whelp puppies, but, this is just a passionate hobby.

Anyone who has trained their dog through the Solms/AZP/HZP or the VGP knows how easy their dog is to hunt and live with but also knows the discipline, time, disappointment and sacrifice it took to get there. This is what must be emphasized to our young people and anyone who comes into the German hunting dog realm in North America. This is not an easy road for most or everyone would have a German titled Versatile hunting dog.

And somewhere through all this, there is a tremendous support group where problem-solving, dedicated relationships bloom. The Future of the DK will be in the hands of our young ones – with our mentorship – and it is all of our responsibility to pass these lessons to our youth – the importance of discipline, time, dedication, and teamwork.

Kurzhaar Voran,

Vanita

The CDKA sponsored a blood tracking Workshop the weekend of the 7th and 8th of May 2 at the home of Sam, Kortney and Kayson Hall in Hot Springs South Dakota. Hot Springs area is a beautiful venue to hold blood tracking events. Game is plentiful, the pine forests offer excellent scenting conditions and the terrain is challenging yet manageable.

Please see the CDKA calendar of events for our Blood Tracking Workshop and the scheduled 20/40 hour blood track we will be hosting.
